A spontaneous ski break can be the perfect reset between meetings, but this winter’s unpredictable weather means travellers need to plan with more precision than usual.

New data shows that extreme conditions — from volatile temperatures to sudden storms — are increasing the likelihood of disruption across Europe’s ski destinations, putting both time and money at risk.

Know where disruption is most likely

SportsCover Direct’s Winter Travel Disruption Index ranks European countries by snow reliability, temperature swings and storm risk. The Czech Republic, Slovakia and Finland currently sit at the top of the risk table. High winds, low precipitation and dramatic temperature fluctuations all contribute to unstable snow conditions and a greater chance of lift closures or travel delays.

If you’re booking late and need reliability, France, Slovenia and Sweden offer the most stable conditions this season. France, in particular, benefits from consistent temperatures, low wind speeds and strong snowfall patterns — reassuring for business travellers who can’t afford last‑minute surprises.

Understand the financial stakes

The average UK skier stands to lose £1,326 if their trip is disrupted, and a family could face more than £5,300 in losses. Despite this, only 13% of travellers hold specialist winter sports insurance, leaving around 1.5 million people exposed to an estimated £2.1 billion in potential losses this season.

As Chris Trotman, Underwriting Manager at SportsCover Direct, explains: “Winter sports trips are highly rewarding but by their nature they’re also unpredictable… even the ‘safest’ destinations aren’t without risk and the number of travellers leaving themselves uninsured is significant.”

The smart traveller’s checklist

  • Choose a stable destination if booking last‑minute — France is the safest bet this season.
  • Check recent snow and weather patterns before committing.
  • Take out specialist winter sports insurance, not a standard policy.
  • Opt for flexible bookings where possible.

A last‑minute ski trip can still be a brilliant winter escape — just make sure you’re choosing wisely and protecting yourself against the season’s growing unpredictability.
