Some hotels whisper their arrival; Crafted at Powdermills strides in with confidence.

Set within 78 acres of woodland and lakeside scenery on the edge of Battle in East Sussex, this newly reimagined hotel‑and‑members’ club is the first opening under Chris King’s new Crafted brand and a fresh chapter after his success with the Birch hotels.

What was once an old country hotel has been transformed into something far more youthful and quietly seductive, thanks in no small part to the design alchemy of House of Dré, the interiors studio known for turning heritage buildings into modern, tactile spaces with soul.

The name “Crafted” is more than branding. It nods to the site’s remarkable past. This was once Battle’s first formal powder mill, part of a network that produced some of Europe’s finest gunpowder from the 17th century until 1874 and reportedly even supplying the Gunpowder Plotters. Today, the only explosions are creative ones: ideas, workshops, wellness rituals and culinary experimentation.

The Georgian main house still carries its original bones, elegant proportions, tall sash windows, a vine‑draped façade but inside, warm woods, sculptural lighting, deep colours, contemporary art and a sense of playfulness.

Rooms: Cosy, Contemporary, and Calm

Guest rooms continue the Crafted ethos: stylish without shouting, tactile without fuss. Soft earthy palettes, natural textures, and thoughtful touches that make the space feel like a creative retreat rather than a standard country‑house room. Beds are generous and cloud‑soft; lighting is warm and flattering and bathrooms are sleek, modern and indulgent, with rainfall showers, deep tubs and high‑quality toiletries that echo the hotel’s wellness‑first philosophy. It’s the kind of room where you can decompress after a day of meetings or open your laptop and actually enjoy working.

Amenities: A Playground for Grown‑Ups

Crafted at Powdermills isn’t just a place to sleep; it’s a place to do. The hotel’s ethos is built around expanding your horizons, whether that’s through cold‑water therapy, pickling workshops, paddleboarding on the lake, or padel on the estate courts.

There’s also a spa, offering treatments that lean into natural ingredients and restorative rituals, and a private members’ club‑style atmosphere in the communal spaces, relaxed, creative, and designed for lingering. Dining is central to the experience: seasonal, thoughtful menus served in spaces that feel both intimate and social. The bar is low‑lit and inviting, ideal for a post‑meeting drink.

A Setting That Invites Exploration

Step outside and the estate opens into a landscape that feels worlds away from the city. Powdermill Lake glints through the trees; walking trails weave through ancient woodland and the quiet is punctuated only by birdsong and the crunch of gravel underfoot. Yet you’re only minutes from Battle, a town steeped in history and home to the site of the Battle of Hastings. Independent shops, galleries and cafés make it an easy afternoon wander.

For business travellers, the location is ideal: close enough to London for a quick escape, but far enough to feel like a genuine reset. The hotel’s blend of creativity, comfort and countryside calm makes it a compelling choice for off‑sites, solo work retreats or simply adding a restorative edge to a business trip.
