Reopening Date Confirmed for Shurijo Castle

Shurijo Castle’s Seiden (Main Hall) will officially reopen with an opening ceremony on 22 November 2026, before opening to the public from 23 November 2026.

Having served for approximately 450 years as the political, diplomatic and cultural centre of the Ryukyu Kingdom, the Seiden was severely damaged in a fire in October 2019, which affected nine structures across the castle complex. Since then, extensive restoration works have been carried out with the support of skilled artisans, experts and local volunteers.

The reopening marks a significant milestone in the restoration of one of Okinawa’s most important cultural and historical landmarks. Located within Shurijo Castle Park, the site continues to serve as a symbol of Okinawa’s rich heritage, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the heart of the former Ryukyu Kingdom once again.

Yaima Line Launches New Taiwan Ferry Route

Okinawa’s connectivity has also expanded with the launch of a new ferry service between Ishigaki Island and Keelung in Taiwan, operated by Yaima Line.
