With more UK holidaymakers expected to rethink trips abroad amid ongoing economic pressures, renowned explorer Ray Mears has highlighted the Vale of Evesham as a compelling, under-the-radar destination for home-grown adventure.

The internationally respected bushcraft expert and photojournalist recently visited the Worcestershire landscape, describing it as one of England’s most quietly rewarding walking destinations—offering an accessible, authentic alternative to overcrowded national hotspots.

As rising travel costs and a weaker pound drive renewed interest in domestic tourism, smaller destinations like the Vale of Evesham are positioning themselves to benefit. Local partners are working collaboratively to attract visitors seeking affordable, meaningful experiences closer to home—while supporting the growth of independent tourism businesses across the region.

During his visit, Ray explored the Vale’s distinctive landscape—a patchwork of rivers, orchards, market gardens and historic villages—while meeting organisations championing sustainable, place-led tourism. These included Evesham Welcomes Walkers, Vale Landscape Heritage Trust, Wychavon District Council, Evesham Place Board and Offenham Touring Park.

The Vale’s appeal lies in its accessibility and authenticity, offering a slower, more connected visitor experience at a time when many travellers are looking to avoid the cost and complexity of overseas trips.

Ray Mears said: “The Vale of Evesham is a remarkable landscape—subtle, but incredibly rich. It’s not about dramatic peaks or vast wilderness, it’s about the detail – rivers, fields, hedgerows, and the way people have worked with the land over generations. What I love about a place like this is its accessibility. You can come here and very quickly feel connected to nature, to history, and to the rhythm of the countryside. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to travel to the far corners of the world to experience something special. Some of the most rewarding landscapes are right here, quietly waiting to be discovered.”

Phil Maclean, Chair of the Evesham Place Board, said: “It was a real privilege to welcome Ray to Evesham. His work has inspired generations to reconnect with the outdoors, so having him experience the Vale first hand is hugely significant. Spending time with Ray one-to-one gave us valuable insights into how places like Evesham can better tell their story—through landscape, authenticity and meaningful visitor experiences.”

With demand growing for lower-cost, experience-led travel, the Vale’s network of walking routes, independent campsites, touring parks and small tourism businesses are well placed to benefit from the ‘staycation reset’ offering visitors an alternative to both international travel and more crowded UK destinations.
