A recent survey of 1,000 business travellers has highlighted a significant challenge: only 48% of their time on the road is spent productively.

Instead, many professionals find themselves idly passing the hours, often resorting to watching television, reading, or playing video games in their hotel rooms.

Interestingly, 94% of respondents manage to fit in some sightseeing during an average three-day business trip. However, 60% express frustration at not making more meaningful use of their downtime.

The survey, conducted by Premier Inn, coincides with the launch of The Downtime Series, a new initiative aimed at helping business travellers maximise their trips. Hosted by Angellica Bell, the series features insights from a sleep expert, the deputy fundraising director of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, and experienced business travellers.

Tamara Strauss, Global Customer Director for Premier Inn, commented: “Travelling for business can be both exciting and rewarding, but it’s not without its challenges. One of the most common experiences professionals face on the road is boredom. Despite the new locations and opportunities, the routine of time away from home, which for many also means time alone, can quickly become monotonous. When you’re constantly on the move, it’s easy for the excitement of the journey to fade, leaving you feeling disconnected from your usual sources of enjoyment and inspiration.”
