Ireland’s oldest railway hotel has entered a new era.

The Great Southern Killarney, part of the Scally Hotel Collection, has unveiled a new brand identity under the banner ‘Splendour, Untamed’, capping a programme of major renovations that recently earned the County Kerry property its five-star classification, the highest grade awarded under Fáilte Ireland’s national quality framework.

Opened in 1854 as Ireland’s first purpose-built railway hotel, the property has welcomed travellers for more than 170 years, pairing Victorian grandeur with modern hospitality. The repositioning is a calculated response to the surging demand for experience-led travel, placing the hotel alongside a new generation of luxury properties competing for guests who want more from a stay than a comfortable bed and a fast check-out.

The new identity trades on a deliberate duality. ‘Splendour’ nods to the hotel’s restored interiors, luxurious accommodation and attentive service, while ‘Untamed’ celebrates the raw landscape of Killarney and County Kerry on its doorstep, a region anchored by the 10,000-hectare Killarney National Park, Ireland’s oldest national park.

“The spirit of The Great Southern Killarney is conveyed with a brand story and visual identity that truly reflects its rich past and ambitious future,” said Bryan Edmondson, partner at brand agency SEA. “The colour palette is inspired by the wild landscape and the typography conveys an authentic voice with elegance and modernity in equal measure.”

The refreshed positioning brings a sharper focus on immersive guest experiences, including guided foraging tours with local experts, photography excursions through the national park and wellness activities such as yoga, programming designed to draw guests out of the hotel and into the landscape.

At the centre of the elevated offer is Arbour, the hotel’s recently launched brasserie-style restaurant. Built around refined classics and seasonal dishes from County Kerry producers, the dining room combines original architectural features with a relaxed contemporary feel, opening onto the hotel’s six-acre private gardens with views towards the national park.

“Securing five-star status and unveiling our new brand positioning marks a defining moment for The Great Southern Killarney and for the wider Scally Hotel Collection,” said Michael Jacobi, managing director of the Scally Hotel Collection. “‘Splendour, Untamed’ perfectly captures the energy that makes the hotel such a special destination for guests from around the world.”

The move adds further momentum to Ireland’s buoyant upmarket hotel scene, which continues to draw business and bleisure travellers to properties from Dublin’s boutique Clarence Hotel to Hastings Hotels’ portfolio across Northern Ireland.

Nightly rates at The Great Southern Killarney start from €375.
