A New Chapter in a Storied Legacy: Hilton London Paddington Embarks on a Heritage-Led Multi-Million-Pound Renovation
As it marks 173 years of history, Hilton London Paddington, the iconic listed hotel renowned for its royal associations and longstanding charitable legacy, announces a landmark multi-million-pound renovation of guest rooms, ballrooms, and interiors – ushering in a new chapter of heritage-luxury hospitality in the capital.
The ambitious first phase of renovation of the hotel’s historic left wing marks the beginning of a carefully considered new chapter, with newly restored rooms scheduled to open in Spring 2026. This stage sets out a clear vision: to honour the property’s remarkable royal and charitable heritage while reinterpreting it as an aspirational destination for the contemporary traveller.
The transformation is rooted in respect for the past while thoughtfully looking ahead. Prioritising guest comfort and sustainability, the project preserves the building’s Victorian character and Art Deco spirit through the restoration of original architectural details. These are complemented by bespoke Art Deco–inspired furnishings, refined fixtures, and carefully reupholstered heritage pieces, ensuring continuity between eras. Bold geometric motifs, refined tilework, and layered textures sit alongside discreet contemporary elements, creating a harmonious balance between historic integrity and modern sensibility.
Originally opened in 1854 as the Great Western Royal Hotel, this listed landmark has long stood as a gateway to London. Inaugurated by HRH Prince Albert and King Pedro V of Portugal as part of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s pioneering railway vision, the hotel has welcomed royalty, statesmen, philanthropists,
and international travellers for more than a century and a half. Under the stewardship of the Bhatia family since 1986, the hotel has continued to balance preservation with progress, hosting royal visits and charitable events while remaining a living part of London’s story. Its unrivalled position above Paddington Station, with a direct 15-minute Heathrow Express connection, ensures it continues to serve as the capital’s front door to the world.
One of the hotel’s most iconic features, the lobby’s grand European crystal chandelier, symbolised the first step in restoring the building’s historic splendour when it joined the Hilton portfolio at the turn of the century. Today, it remains a defining focal point, welcoming guests with a sense of occasion and timeless elegance.
Over the past year, the hotel has completed the transformation of its event spaces, including the Great Western Suite ballrooms. Comprising Great Western I and Great Western II, named after iconic locomotives, these light-filled, pillar-free rooms feature classic architectural detailing and elegant Venetian chandeliers. Designed with flexibility in mind, the spaces can be combined for large-scale conferences and celebrations or used independently for more intimate gatherings. Fully licensed for civil ceremonies, the Great Western Ballrooms are available for weddings, corporate events, and private occasions. Complementing the hotel’s portfolio of 18 meeting and event spaces and benefiting from direct access to Paddington Station, the hotel offers some of the best-connected event spaces in the city, providing ease and elegance in equal measures.
With this landmark renovation, Hilton London Paddington affirms its status as a heritage hotel of distinction, where historic architecture and modern design come together to provide refined and memorable experiences.
