Mama Shelter has closed its sole UK property, drawing a line under six years of trading in London’s Shoreditch district. The 195‑room hotel, which opened in 2019 following the rebrand of the former RE Hotel, marked the brand’s first and only entry into the UK market.
The closure brings an end to a site known for its playful, design‑driven aesthetic and its mix of social spaces, including a 100‑cover restaurant, bar and courtyard with a retractable glass roof. The hotel’s website has been taken offline, and a message on its social channels confirms the shutdown, thanking guests for their support.
Industry sources suggest the building is now being transitioned to a new concept under co-living operator ARK, signalling a shift in direction for the property as the area continues to evolve.
Mama Shelter’s UK ambitions had once extended beyond London, with a Liverpool opening announced several years ago. Despite planning approval and early momentum, the project has faced delays and its future remains uncertain.
Founded in Paris in 2008 by the Trigano family and designer Philippe Starck, Mama Shelter has grown internationally as part of Ennismore’s lifestyle portfolio. The closure of its London outpost leaves the brand without a UK presence for now, as the wider lifestyle hotel sector continues to navigate shifting market conditions and rising operational pressures.
