Eurostar passengers will soon be able to board trains far closer to departure as St Pancras International prepares to overhaul its departure process and cut boarding times by 30 minutes.
The change is part of a wider effort to streamline the station’s international operations and make the experience feel more like rail travel — and less like navigating an airport.
At present, passengers are advised to arrive 60 minutes before departure, with many opting to arrive even earlier to clear security and border checks. Under the new system, travellers will be able to board up to 30 minutes before their train leaves, significantly reducing the time spent queueing and waiting in the departures hall. The aim is to allow at least half of passengers to head straight to the train rather than gathering in the terminal.
The shift comes as St Pancras undergoes a £100 million redesign to expand queuing areas, improve passenger flow and prepare for future competition from new international rail operators expected to enter the market later this decade. The station’s arrivals hall — currently underused — will be repurposed to ease congestion and support the new boarding model.
With border checks becoming more complex in recent years, the redesign is intended to reduce bottlenecks and make international rail travel more appealing for both leisure and business travellers. For Eurostar’s growing customer base, the promise is simple: less waiting, smoother boarding and a more efficient start to the journey.
