Riyadh Air has officially taken to the skies and it did so in style. The Kingdom’s new national carrier celebrated its first-ever commercial flight on its brand‑new Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner, which touched down in Riyadh only five days earlier.
After a whirlwind of final checks, polishing, and pre‑launch excitement, flight RX401 pushed back from Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport bound for London Heathrow, marking a milestone moment for the airline and a fresh chapter in Saudi aviation.
CEO Tony Douglas described the day as “the birth of the world’s newest airline,” and the mood across the team reflected exactly that — a mix of pride, relief and the kind of buzz usually reserved for major celebrations. The Dreamliner’s debut comes after months of daily Riyadh–London flights operated under the airline’s “Pathway to Perfect” readiness programme, a behind‑the‑scenes effort to ensure today’s launch felt seamless for guests.
The new aircraft is the first of several arriving at pace. Riyadh Air welcomed two Dreamliners on 5 June, followed by a third on 7 June, with more on the way as the airline works toward its ambitious goal of connecting Riyadh to 100 destinations by 2030. The early arrival of the aircraft meant the inaugural Dreamliner service to London could be brought forward from its original 1 July date — a welcome surprise for travellers eager to experience the full Riyadh Air treatment.
Heathrow’s Chief Customer Officer, Ross Baker, called the launch a “landmark moment,” noting that the partnership strengthens the airport’s global reach and opens up new onward connections across the Middle East and Asia.
Travellers can book through the Riyadh Air app, website or preferred travel partners, and are invited to join Sfeer, the airline’s loyalty programme, which offers a Best Offer Guarantee, complimentary Wi‑Fi and rewards from the very first flight.
A Dreamliner Designed for Comfort
Riyadh Air’s 787‑9 arrives with a four‑class configuration — Business Elite, Business, Premium Economy and Economy — each designed with a focus on comfort, technology and a sense of calm. Bluetooth audio is available at every seat, alongside traditional jacks, while Business Elite and Business offer fully flat beds in a 1‑2‑1 layout with high‑fidelity sound built directly into the headrests.
Premium Economy features privacy wings, extra storage and multiple charging points, while Economy offers ergonomically crafted seats with adjustable headrests and USB‑C charging. Across all cabins, plush foam and premium fabrics aim to deliver a genuinely restorative experience.
Entertainment, Wellness and a Touch of Magic
The Dreamliner also debuts one of the world’s most modern inflight entertainment systems, with more than 500 films, 600 TV series and 1,000 audio options from partners including Shahid, Disney+, HBO Max and Warner Bros. The Panasonic Astrova system brings cinema‑quality visuals, wireless listening and mobile‑first connectivity to every seat.
Onboard hospitality leans into Saudi craftsmanship and comfort. Guests receive Kayanee wellness products, with bespoke Disney amenity kits for younger travellers. Business Elite and Business guests are offered exclusive Kayanee loungewear, while Premium Economy travellers receive a tailored top. Luxurious bedding by John Horsfall and a curated wellness journey round out the experience.
With its first commercial Dreamliner flight now complete, Riyadh Air has officially entered the global stage and if today’s launch is anything to go by, the airline is determined to make its mark with confidence, comfort and a little sparkle.
