Widnes: The Town That Hosted Half of The Beatles’ Official Record Signings set to Sing for Global Beatles Day 2026

The Fab Four’s autograph history hides an extraordinary Widnes story: out of just four official Beatles record signings ever held, two took place right here in Widnes. That means Widnes hosted half of the Beatles’ entire official signing history – a remarkable piece of music heritage that Culture 26 organisers now want the world to recognise.
On 6 October 1962, with Love Me Do freshly released and Beatlemania still months away from exploding across the globe, The Beatles arrived in Widnes for two intimate signing sessions.
Their first stop was Dawson’s Music Shop – now home to Worldchoice Sports – where local fans queued to meet John, Paul, George and Ringo and have their newly purchased singles signed.
Later that same day, the band headed further down the road to The Music Shop for a second signing session, giving Widnes the unique distinction of hosting two of the only four official Beatles signings ever recorded.
One of those lucky local fans was Pamela Ward, who famously took an extra-long lunch break from her job at Woolworths after hearing the Beatles were in town signing copies of Love Me Do. Pamela and several colleagues joined the queue, secured their autographs and rushed back to work – nearly getting sacked in the process.
Today, Pamela’s signed copy has become a valuable piece of Beatles history and is now recognised as a rare collector’s item.
That history now forms the inspiration behind Widnes’ ambitious plans for Global Beatles Day 2026.
Widnes is getting ready to celebrate Global Beatles Day in unforgettable style as Culture 26 prepares to flood the borough with the sound of Beatles classics performed by local buskers, musicians and music lovers.
On Thursday 25 June 2026, Widnes Town Centre will come alive with performances inspired by the timeless music of The Beatles. From “Hey Jude” to “Let It Be”, Culture Officer at Halton Borough Council, Louise Nulty, is inviting anyone who knows a few Beatles tunes to get involved and help create a day-long celebration of music, community and local talent.
The initiative aims to bring people together through live music while firmly establishing Widnes as one of the most important – and often overlooked – locations in Beatles history.
Culture 26 organisers say the borough should proudly “own” Global Beatles Day by celebrating its unique place in the Beatles story and transforming the town centre into a living tribute to the music and legacy of the Fab Four.
“We want the whole borough buzzing with Beatles music,” Lousie said. “Whether you’re a seasoned performer, an acoustic guitarist, a singer, a ukulele player or just someone who loves the songs, we want to hear from you. The idea is simple – fill Widnes with Beatles Buskers and create something special for Global Beatles Day.”
The celebrations will also feature a special visit from Dale Liverpool helping bring even more Merseybeat spirit and Liverpool music heritage to the event. Proudly connecting with the wider cultural movement happening across the borough through Beyond the Tracks, the acclaimed Halton music trail celebrating the area’s extraordinary musical heritage, and Culture 26;Made in Halton, a borough-wide celebration showcasing Halton’s artists, musicians, performers and creative communities throughout 2026.
Global Beatles Day is celebrated worldwide each year on 25 June, honouring the music, message and cultural impact of The Beatles. Widnes’ 2026 event promises to add a uniquely local flavour, encouraging residents, visitors, businesses and community groups to join in the festivities.
