Minor Hotels has signed the historic Grand Hotel Europa in Innsbruck, a landmark it plans to reopen in 2029 as the Tyrolean capital’s only five-star hotel and the debut of its NH Collection brand in the region.
The agreement brings one of Austria’s most storied properties into the NH Collection Hotels & Resorts portfolio and deepens Minor Hotels’ foothold in a market it has flagged as a strategic priority. The Bangkok-headquartered group operates more than 640 hotels in operation and under development across 66 countries, and the Innsbruck signing marks its arrival in one of the country’s most important leisure and business travel destinations.
After a comprehensive renovation, the hotel will offer roughly 120 rooms and is scheduled to open its doors in 2029. The project extends a run of high-profile European moves for the operator, which recently completed a dual refurbishment of two NH properties in Paris aimed squarely at the corporate travel market.
Built in 1869, the Grand Hotel Europa was Innsbruck’s first luxury hotel and remains one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Positioned directly opposite the central railway station, it became a meeting place for aristocrats, business leaders, artists and international travellers, and in 1883 added its celebrated Barocksaal, or Baroque Salon, a venue that went on to host receptions, balls and society gatherings. Guests over the decades have included Queen Elizabeth II, Albert II of Monaco and The Rolling Stones.
The agreement was signed with Dr Ernst Hutterer, owner of the property and, Minor Hotels said, committed to preserving and revitalising one of Innsbruck’s most iconic hotels. International real estate advisory firm Christie & Co supported the structured operator search.
Just minutes from the historic centre and framed by the Tyrolean Alps, the hotel sits within walking distance of the Golden Roof, Maria-Theresien-Straße, the Imperial Hofburg, the Court Church, the Stadtturm, the Hofgarten and Congress Innsbruck, a spread of cultural, tourist and business anchors that underpins the property’s appeal to corporate and leisure guests alike.
Following its renovation, the property is expected to reclaim its position as one of Innsbruck’s flagship hotels, pairing its historic character with the contemporary standards of the NH Collection brand. The revitalisation plan includes an increase in guestrooms, the addition of further floors and the development of a rooftop bar, a combination the group hopes will set a new benchmark in the city’s hospitality scene.
The hotel is being designed as a destination for guests and residents alike, with a restaurant and bar offering external access, a wellness area, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and dedicated meeting and events space. A defining element of the scheme is the revival of the historic Baroque Hall, which will once again serve as a prestigious venue for celebrations and social occasions.
The signing strengthens a footprint that already spans eight hotels across Vienna, Salzburg and Graz, with Innsbruck extending the group’s reach into one of Austria’s most significant destinations. It also continues Minor Hotels’ wider European push into repositioned five-star assets, following the recent debut of its Colbert Collection soft brand in Florence and the opening of Tivoli President Milano, a full reimagining of a former NH Collection property in the heart of the Italian city.
